Students learn grammar far more effectively when they write and revise their own stories

Jan 3, 2026 | Improving Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling

One of the most challenging aspects of teaching English Language Arts (ELA) concerns proper grammar usage. The difficulty is compounded by testing, where students are provided uninteresting passages to identify incorrect usage and answer the correct usage. While testing in such a manner may be the only realistic method to assure students have achieved the proper knowledge they need, it is contrary to practical learning and normal communication.

Writing fiction overcomes this difficulty because students learn through entertaining activities, ownership of their own passages, and a desire to share stories with the proper usage. As they write and share their own stories, they receive feedback and make revisions so their stories are better communicated. They are in a virtuous cycle of writing, revising, learning, and writing again.
